7 Reasons Your MCB Keeps Tripping (and When to Call an Electrician)

Introduction

An MCB that trips once is doing its job. An MCB that trips every night when you turn on the aircond, or every time the rain starts, is telling you something is wrong.

Here are the seven most common reasons MCBs trip in Malaysian homes and how to tell which one applies to you.

1. Overloaded Circuit

The most common cause. A 20A MCB simply cannot carry a water heater + iron + kettle at the same time. The trip is protecting your wiring from overheating.

Test

Unplug one high-power appliance and reset. If it holds, you have confirmed overload.

2. Short Circuit

Live and neutral wires touching inside a wall, appliance, or socket. MCB trips instantly with a loud "thunk". Never reset without investigation.

3. Earth Leakage

Water or moisture creating a path to ground. The RCCB (not MCB) usually catches this first — common in bathrooms and kitchens.

4. Faulty Appliance

A leaking washing machine motor or cracked kettle element can trip the whole circuit.

How to identify

Unplug every appliance on that circuit, reset, then plug them back one by one. The last one you plug in before the trip is the culprit.

5. Damaged MCB Itself

MCBs wear out. After 10+ years or 50+ trips, the mechanism weakens and trips at half the rated current.

6. Moisture in the Socket

Common during Malaysian monsoon. A wet garage or porch socket can drip water into the back box and trip the RCCB.

7. Wrong MCB Rating

Contractors sometimes install a 10A where 16A is needed (or worse, 32A where 20A is safe). Wrong rating = constant nuisance tripping or fire risk.
